Enlightenment Intensive Scotland
Three days. One question. Who are you?
What is an Enlightenment Intensive?
An Enlightenment Intensive is a structured residential retreat designed to give you a direct experience of who you truly are. Not a concept. Not a belief. A direct, first-person encounter with your own nature.
The format was developed in the 1960s by Charles Berner, drawing on the Zen tradition of intensive practice and the Western dyad communication technique. Participants work in pairs, taking turns to hold a single question — Who am I? What am I? What is life? What is another? — and to communicate whatever arises honestly and without filter.
It is not easy. The work is sustained, demanding, and at times disorienting. It asks you to set aside everything you think you know about yourself and remain open to what is actually here. Most participants describe it as the most significant three days of their lives.
You do not need prior meditation experience. You need only the willingness to look.
"What remains when you stop pretending to be who you think you are?"
The Retreat
Enlightenment Intensive Scotland takes place once a year in the Scottish Borders — a landscape that holds silence. Rolling hills, open sky, and a quality of light that asks nothing of you.
The retreat runs over three full days. Accommodation, meals, and all sessions are included. The schedule is structured from early morning to late evening, with periods of dyad work, walking meditation, and rest. There is no free time in the conventional sense — the inquiry continues throughout.
Numbers are kept deliberately small. This is not a conference or a workshop. It is a container for genuine transformation, and that requires care, space, and the right conditions.
The Facilitator
Damian Tremlett
Damian Tremlett has been practising and facilitating Enlightenment Intensives for many years. He holds the title of EI Master — a designation earned through sustained personal practice, deep familiarity with the format, and the demonstrated capacity to hold a safe and effective container for others.
His approach is direct and unhurried. He does not offer reassurance where none is warranted, and he does not soften what the work requires. He is, however, genuinely compassionate and committed to the well-being of every participant — before, during, and after the retreat.
If you have questions about whether this retreat is right for you, Damian is available to speak with you before you commit.
Participant voices
"I came expecting a meditation retreat. What I found was something I have no adequate words for. Three days that changed the direction of my life."
"Damian holds the space with a rare combination of rigour and warmth. I felt completely safe to go further than I ever had before."
"I have done many retreats. This was different. The dyad work cuts through everything. I would not have believed it possible to go so deep so quickly."
